Topeka Zoo Welcomes Three New Cheetahs to Camp Cowabunga

The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center is excited to announce the arrival of three female Cheetahs, 11-year-old Bria (pronounced BREE- AH) and her two, 4-year-old daughters, Cheka (CHECK-AH) and Kuishi (KWI-SHI). from Lee G. Simmons Wildlife Safari Park in Ashland, Nebraska.

The cheetahs recently arrived after the transfer of Roosevelt as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan (SSP). Bria is the only cheetah recorded to have successfully accepted her cubs after being reunited from a c-section, which was possible through a lot of hard work and dedication from Cheetah husbandry professionals participating in the Cheetah SSP. Cheka and Kuishi are the result of very diligent care, and the Topeka Zoo is honored to have been selected by the Cheetah SSP to house the family.

"Every new animal arrival brings a sense of excitement to the Zoo, but there is something truly extraordinary about cheetahs,” said Wrylie Guffey, Animal Care Director at the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center. “Their beauty, speed and grace inspire awe in people of all ages, and we are excited to share that experience with our guests."

Guests can now see the cheetahs as they explore their new home in the Camp Cowabunga exhibit and become familiar with their surroundings. Zoo animal care staff have been carefully guiding the cats through their transition to ensure they are comfortable and adjusting well to their new environment. During this acclimation period, guests may occasionally experience limited viewing opportunities as the cheetahs continue to settle into their new home.

As the world's fastest land mammal, cheetahs can reach speeds of up to 70 miles per hour in short bursts. Native to parts of Africa, cheetah populations have declined significantly due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict and declining prey populations.

The new arrivals further strengthen the Zoo's commitment to connecting people with wildlife while inspiring conservation action both locally and globally.

Guests are encouraged to visit Camp Cowabunga to welcome the Zoo's newest residents.
